Ground staff at Spain's two major airports have launched an indefinite strike, affecting tens of thousands of flights.

On August 2, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that ground staff at Spain's two major aviation hubs-Barcelona RCMP Airport and Palma Airport in Mallorca-will begin an indefinite strike next Tuesday (August 4), affecting baggage handling, check-in, and boarding positions.
Flights from several airlines, including United Airlines, Lufthansa, Air France, and Air Canada, will be affected.
Both strikes will begin at midnight on August 4, meaning passengers planning to travel through Barcelona or Palma airports will need to be aware of the situation before arriving at the airport.
The Spanish Ministry of Transport estimates that in Barcelona alone, approximately 2 million passengers could be affected between now and the end of September, involving about 11,600 flight takeoffs and landings and 2.4 million seats.
This is the second time in 2026 that Groundforce, a subsidiary of Globalia, will face an indefinite strike. Groundforce is responsible for check-in, baggage handling, boarding, and flight coordination for more than 20 airlines in the two terminals of Barcelona Airport.
In March 2026, ground staff at 12 airports in Spain went on strike. Although the strike was partially suspended after an agreement was reached at the last minute, the union that initiated the strike in August said that the fundamental issues have never been resolved.
