IATA: Aviation security advocates the promotion of digital identity applications

Civil Aviation Resources Network, March 20, 2025: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) called for accelerating the application of digital identity technology to improve aviation safety and operational efficiency.
During the Sydney Leadership Week Conference, government and industry leaders in the field of aviation security unanimously supported this position, emphasizing the importance of strengthening cooperation in the implementation of verifiable credentials (VC) and decentralized identifiers (DID).
Sydney Leadership Week was hosted by Qantas and attracted industry experts and government representatives from Australia, Canada, China, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The advantages of digital identity technology in the field of aviation security have been widely recognized, including:
· Enhance document integrity: reduce fraud and unauthorized access.
· Achieve global mutual trust: achieve secure, cross-border and compatible identity authentication.
· Improve operational efficiency: simplify the document verification process, improve passenger experience, strengthen supervision, and optimize resource allocation.
Nick Careen, IATA's Senior Vice President for Operations, Safety and Security, said: "Global cooperation is key to ensuring aviation safety. Deploying verifiable credentials and decentralized identifier standards is a natural step to improve safety, trust and efficiency. All aviation stakeholders want to make flying safer, and this consensus transcends geopolitical differences. The relevant technologies are mature and proven. We should use this meeting as an opportunity to promote the formation of formal recommendations at the ICAO Assembly later this year."
Strengthening security through digital transformation
At this conference, leaders in the field of aviation safety also identified key action directions to promote the digital transformation of the industry, calling on governments to:
· Accelerate technology integration: Incorporate verifiable credentials and decentralized identifier technologies into national and international security frameworks, consistent with ICAO Annex 17 and the Airline Safety Plan (AOSP).
· Prioritize the promotion of aviation digital identity application scenarios: Incorporate aviation digital identity solutions into national digital strategies to promote global cooperation.
· Strengthen capacity building: Invest resources to help industry stakeholders acquire the necessary knowledge and infrastructure for smooth deployment.
· Expand stakeholder engagement: Increase industry awareness and deployment of digital identity solutions through targeted education and promotional activities.
Industry supports governments in promoting digital identity applications
As one of the key initiatives to promote digital identity applications, IATA's OneID initiative promotes globally interoperable digital identity standards, enabling passengers to verify travel documents before departure and move through airports unimpeded through biometric technology without the need for paper documents. OneID complements ICAO's Digital Travel Credential (DTC) to ensure security and efficiency while taking into account passenger privacy protection and compliance with global regulations.
In addition, IATA is promoting the construction of the Aviation Security Trust Framework to promote regulatory coordination, cross-industry collaboration and infrastructure construction to fully apply the advantages of digital identity technology to the global aviation sector.
