On December 26th local time, a severe winter storm was battering the northeastern United States, with New York City expected to receive its heaviest snowfall in nearly four years, amounting to approximately 7 inches. Widespread flight cancellations and delays occurred across the US, impacting the operations of numerous airports and airlines. According to data from FlightAware, as of 3:50 PM Eastern Time on the 26th, over 5,500 flights were delayed, and approximately 1,500 flights were canceled-a number far exceeding the number of cancellations during Christmas and Christmas Eve. FlightAware data shows that JetBlue canceled 227 flights, Delta Air Lines canceled 215, Republic Airlines canceled 162, Southwest Airlines canceled 150, and American Airlines canceled 97. The most severely affected airports were the three major airports in the New York area. John F. Kennedy International Airport alone canceled 370 flights and delayed 200 on the 26th; Newark and LaGuardia airports also canceled over 230 flights each. The airport reminded passengers on social media to contact their airlines to confirm flight status.
