The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that around 6:30 PM local time on March 13th, a strong chemical odor forced the evacuation of personnel from the Potomac Radar Control Center near Washington, D.C., resulting in the grounding of all flights at four airports in the Washington area.
The Potomac Radar Control Center provides air traffic control services for the Baltimore-Washington and Richmond-Charlottesville areas. As a result, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, Baltimore-Washington International Airport, and Richmond International Airport grounded all flights.
The grounding order was lifted around 8:00 PM that evening. Airports began gradually resuming flight operations. Baltimore-Washington International Airport stated that airlines were gradually resuming normal operations and preparing for flight departures, anticipating some delays throughout the evening.
