The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it will invest $16.5 million to install transponders on approximately 1,900 vehicles at 264 airports across the United States. This will help air traffic control identify and track vehicles on runways and taxiways, improving airport safety.
The FAA reiterated its recommendation to airports to utilize federal funding to install transponders on their vehicles and encouraged airlines and other airport-operating entities to do the same. More than 50 airports have already expressed interest.
The FAA stated that installing transponders helps prevent dangerous runway accidents and reduces blind spots on U.S. runways and taxiways by accelerating the deployment of this technology.
At airports equipped with ground surveillance systems, transponders can track vehicle positions. Vehicle information and call signs are displayed on controllers' screens. Vehicles without transponders appear only as blue diamonds on controllers' screens, without any identification information.
On March 22, 2026, a Canada Express passenger plane collided with a fire truck that was not equipped with a transponder while landing at LaGuardia Airport. The incident prompted the FAA to accelerate the installation of transponders on airport vehicles.
