On July 19, 2026, Civil Aviation Resource Network reported that on July 10 local time, an Iberia Airbus A321XLR and an Air Europa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner narrowly avoided a collision over the Atlantic Ocean. Both aircraft received a Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) warning and took evasive action, averting a potential air disaster.
The flights involved were Iberia flight IB140 from Recife to Madrid and Air Europa flight UX57 from Madrid to São Paulo.
At the time of the incident, both aircraft were cruising at altitude FL360 on the same route near the Western Sahara coast.
It is understood that although their flight paths were opposite, air traffic control permitted both aircraft to maintain the same altitude. Fortunately, the onboard TCAS system-an independent safety system designed to prevent aircraft collisions-issued RA warnings simultaneously in the cockpits of both aircraft.
The Iberia Airbus A321XLR immediately descended, while the Air Europa Boeing 787 climbed, restoring a safe separation.
Both flights then continued to their respective destinations and landed safely.
The cause of the altercation is currently unknown.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident, as aircraft flying in opposite directions at the same altitude on an ocean route indicate a serious failure in air traffic separation.
