Civil Aviation Resources Network May 13, 2025: According to Reuters, British electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developer Vertical Aerospace said on Monday that it is developing a long-range hybrid electric version of its air taxi VX4 and plans to enter commercial markets including defense and logistics.

Vertical says the new version has a range of up to 1,000 miles, 10 times that of its all-electric predecessor, and can carry a maximum payload of 1,100 kilograms.

As demand for urban air mobility grows, several air taxi startups are racing to get electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft certified while also exploring the potential for more commercial applications of the emerging technology.

"Demand for long-range, high-load, low-noise aircraft is growing rapidly, particularly in the defense and critical logistics sectors," said Stuart Simpson, CEO of Vertical Aerospace.

The move comes on the heels of the company's announcement last week of a long-term partnership with Honeywell to assist with certification of key systems for its VX4 air taxi.

Vertical also said it plans to start flight testing of a hybrid-electric version in the second quarter of 2026, with a certification target of 2028.
